The village of Pooley Bridge, approximately one mile distant, can be reached by road or visitors may walk along a footpath that, for much of its way, skirts the lake. Rowing boats or small motor cruisers can be hired from Pooley Bridge and the village also offers a selection of public houses and cafes as well as gift shops. A tourist information office is also located here.

Visitors can catch lake steamers to Howtown and Glenridding.
